A new Berlin Wall is being erected. This one just happens to be made of paint and Styrofoam. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the wall being torn down, the city of Berlin has created an exhibit symbolizing the hope and strength that has accrued in the last 20 years.
One thousand pieces of eight-foot tall Styrofoam have been painted with symbols of peace, images of the city’s historic moments, and bright representations of places around the world that still need mending. Other images are of doves, flowers, and rainbows, and include the words “freedom,” joy,” and “miracle.”
In a monumental exhibit on Nov. 9, the pieces will be lined up in a one-mile long arrangement, and ceremoniously knocked down in a domino effect.
The observance will represent the downfall of European communist governments and the dismantling of the iron curtain. Sections of the “wall” will fall in timed increments, and in between each section, there will be orchestral music by Daniel Barenboim, and speeches by international statesmen and women.
