In the pantheon of places to be in the Caribbean, the British territory of Anguilla is sometimes overlooked. Pity. It’s an ecological treasure trove, a retreat just a half-beat off the beaten path that’s well worth the trip.

Access just got easier out of Puerto Rico now that Cape Air offers as many as three daily San Juan flights to Anguilla. Triple-daily flights are on peak days – Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tuesdays and Thursdays the carrier lofts a pair of daily flights.

The new added San Juan flight to Anguilla departs San Juan at 3:55 p.m. and gets to the island at 5:15. The new return trip is particularly welcome for folks out to make a connection over San Juan to the United States. Cape Air’s first Anguilla flight to San Juan departs at 8:30 a.m. and arrives at 9:50 a.m.

You can book passage to Anguilla on discount airline JetBlue’s website. The carrier also code-shares with Continental.

The neat thing about the trip if you fly Cape Air is the journey itself. Jets are terrific. But if you really want to see the Caribbean up close, book a seat on one of Cape Air’s Cessna 402 piston-engine aircraft. The windows are big, the vistas amazing.

Gaze gape-jawed at spectacular coral reefs just below the azure ocean. Behold from above some of the most pristine beaches in the Caribbean basin, just waiting for your umbrella and beach towel. Anguilla is the very definition of ‘laid back,’ and it’s beckoning you.
