If there’s one thing Rome doesn’t do, it’s mess around. Our advice to you? Don’t mess around with it, either.
Rome is a beautiful city that can be experienced as a romantic paradise or an adventurous thrill – but it can also become your worst nightmare if you choose to stand in every line at all the wrong times, fall for tourist traps that don’t resemble the real Italy, or waste your time on things that sound authentic, only to discover a total ruse. When in Rome, do as the experts and locals do.
It’s perfectly acceptable to want to see everything and experience the world-famous religious icons and historic monuments, but make sure you do it with your wits about you. Our Rome experts know how to navigate the city and make the most out of seeing the most beautiful sights with the most efficiency, while avoiding annoying glitches and unnecessary stops along the way.

10 Things Not to do in Rome:
1. DON’T drive. If you enjoy living, do not attempt it. Rome is a walking city, and seeing it on foot is the best way to absorb the atmosphere anyway.
2. On that note, DON’T cross any street without looking.
3. DON’T be offended by catcalls from men. These are seen as compliments in Italy, and will eventually stop if you ignore them.
4. DON’T go to the Vatican on a Monday. The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays, so Mondays are even more crowded than usual.
5. DON’T miss Trastevere. This little neighborhood isn’t on most travel itineraries, but it’s a local neighborhood home to some of the best restaurants in Rome.
6. DON’T get dinner near the train station. This is the worst and most overpriced food in Rome.
7. DON’T visit Rome – or Italy, for that matter – in August. Most Italians are on holiday for the month, leaving you with the tourists and lots of closed establishments.
8. DON’T waste money on bottled water. Refill a bottle at fountains – they’re safe and all the Romans do so!
9. DON’T go to the Colosseum and the Forum without sun protection. There’s very little shade, and you’ll burn in minutes.
10. DON’T give money to gypsies. Give just once and they’ll never leave you alone.
