Flights may have fallen off as of late, but savvy airports are preparing for the future when air travel rebounds. Case-in-point: the expansion of Raleigh/Durham International Airport’s (RDU) brand-new Terminal 2.

The first phase of Terminal 2 debuted back in October 2008. Contractors wasted scant time getting to work on the current phase: the expansion from 19 current gates to 36. There will also be a third ticketing island, replete with 20 positions, and an additional two baggage claim carousels.

Look for the new additions to Terminal 2 to be up and running by early 2011.

Raleigh/Durham International is a focus city for American Airlines, specifically American Eagle. From RDU, American fields non-stop service to London Heathrow (LHR). It’s a critical European connection for folks doing business in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.
