The Badger State celebrates its 166th birthday this week, and we’re celebrating with these five reasons we love Wisconsin.

It’s the place where waters gather.

“Wisconsin” means “the place where waters gather” in the native Ojibwe language, and you don’t have to look far to enjoy the rivers and lakes that define this state. From the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes, there’s no shortage of scenic waters to enjoy.

With beaches like these, you’d never guess you’re thousands of miles from the nearest ocean.

Wisconsin’s beaches are lined with sandy shores, just like on the country’s coastlines. Digging your toes into the sand of Wisconsin’s shores, you’d swear you were looking out onto the ocean — except you’re in the heart of the Midwest.

The state has a healthy appreciation for cheese.

Cheesemaking in Wisconsin goes back generations, and the state is beloved for producing more than 350 varieties of this dairy delight.

The state also knows its way around a beer or two.

What better to wash down that plate of cheese than a tall glass of beer? Wisconsin gave us mainstays like Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller, but there are around 100 other breweries throughout the state that deserve a little one-on-one time with your tastebuds.

Wisconsin knows how to make winter look good.

With its snow sports, glacial ice caves and scenic, snow-laced landscapes, Wisconsin makes winter look downright stunning.
