With Independence Day fast approaching, it’s time to look for 4th of July travel deals. Whether you’re interested in a weekend excursion just a short drive away or a beach getaway across the country, 4th of July travel deals are out there to be found. First thing’s first: Decide what kind of holiday weekend you’re looking for this year. Cheapflights has compiled a list of alternative trips if your goal is to celebrate the patriot in you without the company of hordes of tourists.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

Two hours by car from both Philadelphia and New York City, the Poconos provides a great holiday escape for city dwellers. Considered by some Pennsylvania’s most popular tourist destination, the mountainous region offers families and couples alike the chance to savor freshwater lakes and throwback traditions without venturing too far from home. Book a room near Lake Harmony and spend your days row boating, waterskiing or jet skiing on the placid body of water. If lake activities don’t exactly do it for you, opt for bike riding or hiking through the surrounding miles of untouched land.

Tampa, Florida
Before Florida’s summer heat swelters to uncomfortable temps, fly into Tampa – the Sunshine State’s west coast metropolis. 4th of July travel deals are countless in and around the city on the bay. Spend nights at hip restaurants and niche bars in Ybor City, a popular district in downtown Tampa. Wake up early for a four-mile bike ride along the awe-inspiring Bayshore Drive before hitting pristine beaches in Clearwater or St. Petersburg. Get your quintessential 4th of July hot dog and beer at a Tampa Bay Rays game, or bring out the child in you at the ever-popular Busch Gardens, located in North Tampa.

Kansas City, Missouri
Though its world-renowned barbecue restaurants are reason enough to go, Kansas City offers a slew of fabulous things to do over 4th of July weekend. But obviously, start with the BBQ. Head to Oklahoma Joe’s, located in a combination gas station-liquor store for the best ribs in the Midwest. After licking your fingers clean, shop ‘til you drop at Country Club Plaza, a concentrated cluster of stores, restaurants and theaters in the heart of town. For the best fireworks around, bring a blanket and beverages to Berkley Riverfront Park for the annual KC Riverfest.
