Expand both your horizons and your taste buds

We’ve picked six European countries (listed alphabetically) that Cheapflights’ North American and European users rate among their favorites to visit and get merry.

Beer drinkers the world over tend to be fanatically loyal to their favorite brew, whether it’s a local brewery that produces craft beers or, in today’s “global village,” a favored import from further afield. Air travel gives us the opportunity to expand both our horizons and our taste buds by visiting new destinations and sampling their local brews. So what better place to take that first sip than at the airport?

Europe is home to more than 2,300 breweries. These range from long established, internationally known majors to smaller regional producers of specialist brews. Undoubtedly, Europe will have a beer to suit every taste, and not surprisingly, it boasts nine of the world’s 10 countries with the highest beer consumption per capita. This guide highlights the brands brewed near airports, which can most likely be found at airport bars alongside the larger, international brands.

While beer may have originated from the Middle East, going hand in hand with bread making, Europe took the art of brewing and perfected it. European beer types, strengths and temperatures are about as varied as a Starbucks coffee menu, so it’s worth doing a little research before heading off to a new destination to try out a regional specialty. Remember that beer strength is measured in ABV (or alcohol by volume), so the higher the percentage, the happier you’ll be.
