Moab makes a great basecamp for adventures in Utah’s stunning red rock Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and the Colorado River. Here’s our pick of the best winter activities in Moab.

Run an ultramarathon

GrassRoots Events organize 55k and 33k runs over Utah’s rugged terrain every President’s Day Weekend (the third Monday in February). The guy who created the race dubbed it the Red Hot because the way the region’s snow-covered sandstone spires glisten in the sun reminded him of embers of a fire.

Ride horseback for three days

Ride one enormous 50-mile scenic loop (no backtracking or repeat trails) through what locals triumphantly call Big Canyon Country. What better way to discover John Wayne country – many of his films and other Westerns were shot in and around Moab – than riding a horse. Registration for the ride includes vet checks, detailed maps, route flagging, lunch for riders and hay for the horse. Horses are not included (we’re not joking, participants need to arrange their own horses). The Moab Canyons Endurance Ride is open for three days every October.

Snowtubing in La Sal Mountains

The La Sal Mountains have a designated site for tubing near the plowed turn around of the GeyserPass road. Bring your own tube or sled. A thermos filled with hot cocoa is a recommended optional extra.
