The American Airlines terminal at New York JFK was the site of a terror scare yesterday, after officials discovered a suspicious package.

However, after evacuating the terminal, it was discovered that the package was harmless, and normal service resumed within an hour.

Steve Coleman, a Spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said that a suspicious package was found at 10:20am, and was investigated by the NYPD bomb squad, reports the Associated Press.

However, the package was found to contain nothing more than cologne, Coleman confirmed.

The alert followed an apparent terrorist attack at Glasgow Airport in Scotland, where a burning Jeep was driven into the main terminal building.

Five people have been arrested. Prime Minister Gordon Brown linked the attack – as well as a recently discovered car bomb in central London – to the al-Qaeda terrorist group.

Coleman added that, in light of the raised terror threat in the UK, the Port Authority took “a number of measures as we always do to respond to security situations immediately”.
