Stewart International Airport in New Windsor is to receive funding from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
It is hoped that by improving facilities at Stewart, the airport will be used as an alternative to John F Kennedy, Newark and LaGuardia and help to ease congestion at these three busier sites.
The Port Authority will spend $500 million on Stewart Airport over the next ten years, with the money used to update the terminal building.
Anthony Shorris, Executive Director of the Port Authority, told the Associated Press that three million passengers could use Stewart each year after the improvement work is complete.
“We have a belief that Stewart can be kind of a beacon for a lot of things,” he said. “An anchor for growth in the Hudson Valley, a major reliever of the other airports, a cargo and job-generating facility for a new economic growth pattern and a demonstration of the potential for sustainable development in aviation.”
Diannae Ehler, General Manager at the airport, revealed that she would be traveling to Europe next month to discuss the possibility of more international carriers using Stewart as a New York base.
