You could spend days exploring a city and never get to know it like you can after the sun sets. Once night falls, these urban centers take on a whole new personality. The daily business bustle is replaced by fun seekers waiting to see what night brings, and bright lights set the tone for after-hours fun. Must-see attractions like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Colosseum in Rome offer completely different experiences at night, while restaurants, nightclubs and even shopping districts serve up late-night escapes.

Some of the most notable nighttime skylines include San Francisco, thanks to its skyscrapers and the Golden Gate Bridge, and Sydney, especially during the annual Vivid Sydney arts festival that lights up the Sydney Opera House with a spectacular array of colors and patterns.

Take a look at some of the world’s most famous cities in a new light with this nighttime photo tour.
