Bridges are much more than a way to cross over water or rocky terrain – they’re also lasting testaments to society’s advancements in the fields of architecture and construction. From the evolution of fanciful designs to the technology that brings these designs to life, bridges have long since evolved from the simple wooden bridges of centuries past.

Bridges have become so much more than a transportation necessity that many have become landmark attractions in their own rights. A first-time visit to San Francisco, for example, would feel incomplete with at least seeing the Golden Gate Bridge with one’s own eyes, while the Brooklyn Bridge has become much more than one of the country’s oldest suspension bridges: Today, it stands as a symbol for New York City. Meanwhile, bridges like the Henderson Wave Bridge in Singapore or the Python Bridge in Amsterdam are as much artistic expressions as they are functional roadways.

Take a look at some of the world’s most beautiful bridges for yourself with this photo tour.
