There’s more than one boardwalk on the East Coast, more than one way to stroll along the ocean and not get your feet wet. Atlantic City’s the king, but this spring break consider a couple of alternatives.

Virginia Beach is convenient to D.C., and not all that far from some of the best universities in the country. Maybe best of all, you can bring along your pet – at least through Memorial Day.

The Virginia Beach boardwalk is a three-mile deal. That’s one of the things that makes this resort so accessible. Bike, roller blade, jog or just stroll.

All this movement means a major appetite. Virginia Beach is laced with great places to eat. Check out the 11th Street Taphouse Bar & Grille.

A couple of major events are timed to bracket spring break dates: The Shamrock Marathon runs March 16 through 18, and the Virginia Beach Car Show revs up April 14. Roll your break into one of these for a great twofer.

Down the coast Myrtle Beach makes a living catering to spring breakers. The area boasts 60 miles of bounteous beach, and it’s outdoor an adult sandbox.

Among the ways to play:

– Ride the SkyWheel on the Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade – the perfect way to survey what’s happening. The views of the Atlantic are awesome.

– Parasail over it all, towed by a Coast Guard-inspected Parasailing boat. This CWS Ocean Pro 31 is rigged to accommodate everyone, including folks who are physically challenged.

– See Dolphins up close and personal from a 49-passenger boat. This is a terrific way to break away from the madding crowd back on shore and kick back a bit.

– Let loose at the House of Blues. The music hall lives and breathes authenticity. It’s sheathed in tin from an old tobacco farm in Mississippi.

Think out of the boardwalk box this spring break. It might become a habit.
