Airport Overview

Hurghada International Airport is a major gateway to this popular Egyptian beach and diving resort.

The city of Hurghada, until fairly recently an unassuming fishing village, is now a throbbing tourist destination with more than 100 hotels and several beautiful beaches. One of the most popular spots on the Red Sea, it’s a year-round destination for snorkelling and scuba diving holidays. If you have a day or two, you could try camel-riding, desert quad-biking, glass-bottomed boat rides or day cruises on the Red Sea, haggling with store owners in the many bazaars, or smoking a sheesha pipe in a local cafe.

Many travellers found the old terminal chaotic and busy, but the newly expanded terminal, which opened this year, is much larger and more modern, with an annual capacity of 7.5 million people.

Terminal Transfer

There is only one terminal at Hurghada Airport, so it should be easy enough to find your way between the departure and arrivals areas.

Getting into Town

Train: There is no train station at the airport, or in town. Several minibuses follow about eight set routes throughout the city, including the airport. They leave from just outside the airport and will wait to fill up before leaving. At under EGP 1 a trip, these are by far the cheapest way to get around, although they can take some getting used to.

Bus: The official airport shuttle bus leaves from just outside the airport, although only when the bus is full. It costs about EGP 25 to get into town, so if you’re travelling in a group of two or more, it’ll be cheaper to get a taxi. Several hotels offer their own shuttle services from the airport, so it’ll be worth it to check. Not all of them are free, however.

Taxi: There are numerous official and unofficial taxis operating from just outside the airport. It’s wise to insist on a set price before you leave. A trip to town should cost about EPG 50, plus a 5-10 per cent tip. Luggage is always included in the price.

Car Parking

There is one main car park in front of the main terminal building with around 1,000 spaces. The short-term spaces (up to 24 hours) are just in front of the building, while long-term spaces (for 24 hours or more) are further away.

Information Desks

There are no information desks at the airport.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: Bank, 24-hour ATMs, a currency exchange office and a post office with Internet access are in the main terminal.

Luggage: There is a left-luggage facility and a lost luggage office in the arrivals area. Baggage wrapping facilities are also available in the departures section.

Conference and business: There are no conference facilities at the airport – your best bet would be a nearby hotel, several of which are a quick five-minute drive away. There is a VIP lounge with free snacks and magazines, although you’ll need to phone ahead to make a reservation.

Other facilities: There’s a mosque, and a children’s play area.

Wi-Fi: There is no Wi-Fi at the airport, although there are workstations with Internet access in the post office.
