Calgary International Airport is in a good position to survive the global financial crisis and the downturn in the aviation industry, it has been claimed.

Bob Schmitt, Senior Vice-President of Planning and Engineering at the Calgary Airport Authority, pointed out that no major expansion decisions have been planned for the next two years.

Plans for the $500 million fourth runway and $1.3 billion international terminal can be shelved if required, he added.

In an interview with the Calgary Herald, Schmitt said: “We’re in a sweet spot in that we’re in a concept development design phase.

“We’ve got no major commitments on major projects, and we’re able to make those decisions depending on what happens with the economy over the next couple of years.”
