Before you firm up the particulars of that Hawaiian vacation, consider a few tips from the folks who live there. An informal poll from HawaiiamBeachRentals.com says locals like to:

– Hike the Napali Trail, on Kauai. The 11-mile trek traverses five valleys before ending up at Kalalau Beach. Don’t have the stamina? Try a more manageable two-mile hike along the trail to the beach at Hanakapi’ai;

– Visit Haleakala Crater on Maui. It’s accessible by automobile, and the sunrises are sensational. Take a sweater. It gets cold up there;

– Drive the Waimea Valley on Kauai, the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. It’s startling and sublime. Jaw-dropping canyons are punctuated by some storybook waterfalls here;

– Snorkel Oahu’s Kaneohe Bay; mingle with tropical fish and see sea turtles;

– Zig-zag along the road to Hana, over on Maui. There are lots of overlooks that will flat out take your breath away. Hana’s beaches a black sand, bequeathed by Mother Nature;

– Get into a snowball fight atop Mauna Kea, on the Big Island of Hawaii. A winding road will take you there;

– Finally, this lesser-known insight for folks who do most of their vacation on Oahu, the island on which Honolulu is located. Take the Pill Box hike in Lanikai. The entrance is a bit hard to find, but the short trek offers some lovely sun – and moon – rise scenes. It’s the kind of image you want to take home with you, and pull out on a particularly morose Monday morning.
