To some people in the world, there is nothing more achingly thrilling than waking up at the break of dawn and riding the waves. You’re either a surfer, or you’re not. Beginners are always welcomed and encouraged to start their journey of wipe-outs, but legends and veterans make breaking waves look like the most natural thing in the world.

Being one with the ocean – the most dynamic playing field imaginable for a sport – is one of the most attractive parts of surfing. From the crisp salty air to the white crashing inward, this water sport is a religion for people known as “soul surfers.”

The Gold Coast in Australia is an icon for surfers all around the world. With 43 miles of white sand, and holding the title for the most consistent waves in the nation, this vibrant area holds the key to hanging ten, mate. Sand, surf, and nightlife are the three most captivating components of this rocking shoreline mecca. Nearby theme parks are perfect alternatives when you just can’t get back on the board one more time.

Think surfing is just a stylish playtime of beach bums? Think again. This board sport is a scintillating full-body work out that targets your shoulders and core, and improves cardiovascular health, muscle tone, and endurance. Stepping off the board the first time might leave you exhausted, but making surfing a regular part of your life will up your energy levels, strengthen your thighs and calves, and back, and develop your gross motor skills.

Beginners should choose the whitest waves possible. Lay flat on the board and paddle out. Stand up when you feel enough balance, and ride the wave as long as you can. Falling backwards off the board is called a “wipe out” – when you do that, make sure to use both arms to cover your head. Remember to always check your beach for lifeguards on duty and the current sea conditions.

You’ll need a surfboard, a wet suit, a leash, and good attitude to work your way up to the locals here and get the fit surfer body. After all, the Australia’s Gold Coast had been home to the Association of Surfing Professionals, and has run both the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Trials.
