Nothing says “unbeatable views of the waterfront and ocean below” quite like a Ferris wheel — those larger-than-life rotating cars that have been ground zero for romance and sightseeing since George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. first debuted his giant wheel in 1893.

The skylines of roaming carnivals and fairs are usually defined by these observation wheels, but nothing compares to sights you’ll see atop the permanent Ferris wheels found on waterfronts from Santa Monica, Calif. to Singapore.
