The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has announced plans to auction landing slots at New York airports sooner than originally planned.

Airlines will be able to bid for slots at John F Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty starting Jan. 12. The FAA explained that the auctions are designed to relieve congestion across the New York City region and also allow for more competitive prices from airlines.

A full list of available flight times will be posted on the FAA Web site on Dec. 29, before the auction takes place.

A statement from the regulator read: “These rules are designed to encourage more efficient airline behavior, help alleviate congestion.”

“The agency plans to use the proceeds from the auctions to mitigate congestion and delay in the New York area.”

However, the auction plan has been criticized by airlines and the Air Transport Association, which has lodged a court complaint against the motion.
