Frequent travelers know to pack light and carry-on, but if you do require bag check you are likely going to wait around after a long flight anxiously awaiting your luggage to arrive on a rickety, outdated bag carousel. Future travelers on St. Louis flights won’t have to wait and worry much longer…

St. Louis airport workers recently began dismantling an older carousel in the Main Terminal, the fist of six venerable bag belts and a pair of large-claim units.

When the project is complete (currently scheduled for June 2009), the new system will sport a revamped conveyor system linking airline luggage tags and the new carousels.

While all this work is going on, STL plans to shut down just one of the older carousels at a time, which airport officials say will ease the strain on flyers.

The new layout is costing St. Louis near $5.5 million, and it’s part of what STL labels its $16.7 million ‘Lambert Airport Experience Program.’
