When is the best time to fly to Porto Alegre?

A great year-round climate makes Porto Alegre a popular choice with travellers any time of year. Like many tropical destinations, Porto Alegre is hot, humid and muggy between the months of April and August – but muggy months can mean great discounts on airfare and hotel rooms in Porto Alegre. September is another month for deep discounts, thanks to rainy weather and high humidity levels.

The best time to visit Porto Alegre is between the months of October and April, when temperatures are warm and the city is dry. It is the best season to visit the city because of its moderate weather.

If you’re coming for the festivals, consider February, when the Carnival celebration is held, or September, when the country celebrates its Independence Day.

City overview

A port city and one of the largest in Brazil, Porto Alegre is an urban hub known for its enticing mix of European heritage, historical architecture and rich cultural offerings.

Surrounded by rivers and a freshwater lake, Porto Alegre quickly became a centre for industry, transportation and business. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by both the bustle of an urban city center and natural green oases that are spread throughout and around the city. With no shortage of Neoclassical architecture, sprawling parks and rolling rivers meant for soaking up sunsets, there is plenty to set your sights on in Porto Alegre.

Parque Farroupilha is a popular respite for city dwellers. As the city’s largest park, Parque Farrouphilha is filled with monuments, green space and a diverse mix of Brazil’s natural flora. Markets are often held here on the weekends, as are concerts and community events.

Another sight to set your eyes upon while at the park is Cathedral Metropolitana, a 20th-century Neoclassical design whose hilltop presence is worth a closer look.

When it comes to culture, take in the local artwork at Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul, an art museum that shines the spotlight on various artists from the area. The Fundação Iberê Camargo Museum is also worth a stop, both for the architecture and the artwork inside.

To round up your experience, plenty of shopping malls and restaurants also await.

Getting around Porto Alegre

There are multiple options available to get around the city. A public bus system connects visitors to all parts of Porto Alegre, and fares can be paid upon boarding the bus with cash. A local van system offers an alternative way to get around the city, with a flat rate charged. Taxis can also be hailed throughout Porto Alegre, and there are designated taxi stands where one can hail a cab. Taxis are metered.

Getting from the Airport to the City

Porto Alegre is serviced by Salgado Filho International Airport (POA), about 8.5 miles (13.5 km) north of the city centre. Two types of taxis are available on the airport: red taxis are ones that also service the town, while white taxis exclusively service the airport. The fare is the same for both cabs. Travellers can take taxis into town or to a nearby railway station that connects to the city.
