Situated on the Wörthersee Lake in Southern Austria, Klagenfurt is an attractive holiday destination. The city is flanked by beautiful alpine hills and rich forests, with the Glan River winding its way through the valley to the south. Once a commercial stronghold, Klagenfurt is steeped in folklore and legend and its origins are said to be integrally connected with a legendary winged dragon, the Lindworm, which can still be seen gracing the city centre as a monument. One of the main appeals of a flight to Klagenfurt is its many historical sites, including the Landhaus, a country house built in the 16th Century, Klagenfurt Cathedral, built in 1581 and Viktring Abbey, a Cistercian monastery established in 1142. Alongside its many historical monuments, Klagenfurt offers a number of family attractions, of which one of the most curious is the Minimundus, a miniature park situated on Lake Wörthersee, which displays more than 150 miniature models of famous buildings from around the world. The lake itself is particularly popular with holidaymakers, due to its warm waters and beach, which is the largest inland beach in Europe.
