Given its close proximity to New York City, Islip in New York State makes a great base for tourists wishing to explore Long Island as well experience all the sights and sounds The Big Apple has to offer. A great time to visit this city is during the celebration of harvest time in September and October and Thanksgiving in November. There are often fairs and festivals held at this time of year, such as the Islip Apple Festival held in October, which aim to remember and celebrate the history of the region from the time of the first settlers. Those visiting in the winter months of December, January and February are advised to bring plenty of warm clothes, as it often snows quite heavily.
One of the main attractions of this part of the U.S. is the natural beauty of the area. Lovers of the outdoors will be in their element exploring the stunning coastline, rivers and green landscapes. A number of state parks have been created in order to preserve the natural environment. These include Heckscher State Park, which is located on the south shore and, just a few miles away, the Connetquot River State Park. Both offer hiking, nature watching and horse riding amongst other activities. Robert Moses State Park on the beautiful Fire Island is a must for those looking for water-based activities and, for a spot of local history, the Historic Islip Trail takes in numerous historic buildings such as Sagtikos Manor which was famously visited by President George Washington during his tour of Long Beach in 1790. Finally, if there is time, a trip to New York City is almost obligatory. Simply take a train on the Long Island Rail Road system from Islip to Penn Station in Manhattan. It runs 24/7 and the journey takes just over an hour each way.
As one would expect, there is a very good public transport system in this city and Long Island as a whole. Taxis too are an option for getting around but this can be pricey. Many visitors to America choose to rent a car since car travel is very easy in America.
Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) is the nearest airport to the city. For those arriving at this airport, there are a number of onward travel options including bus services, taxis and rail; Ronkonkoma railway station is a mile away from the airport. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the next nearest airport, is an hour away on the train.
