Forget about the 1983 US-led invasion that helped to quell a coup and think instead about the beautiful tropical locale that the island nation has to offer. Nestled deep in the Caribbean, Grenada is known as the “Island of Spice” for its production of nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Book your cheap flight to Grenada and sample the country’s pristine beaches, historic forts, and working spice estates.
As is the case in most Caribbean locales, Grenada’s tropical climate means it is coolest during the dry season (January-May) and warmer in the rainy season (June-December). It can still rain during the dry season but those rains usually last an hour or less.
The beginning and end of the dry season (January and May) are the ideal times to travel to Grenada.
Grenada is actually a chain of islands centered around three major islands: Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique. Ferry services run between the three islands, or visitors can charter boats through their hotels or by visiting the Grenada Yacht Club. The natural beauty of the islands and the idyllic Caribbean surrounding is what makes a trip to Grenada, so island hopping is strongly recommended.
Formerly known as Port Salines International Airport, Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) is located on Point Salines, about five miles (8km) south of the town of St George’s on the island of Grenada.
Grenada’s airport has a colorful history as the hub of the US military invasion of the island in 1983. Since then, the Grenadian government has expanded the airport as an important piece of tourism infrastructure. In 2009 it was renamed for the late Prime Minister who oversaw the expansion. While the airport is still tiny by international standards, it wins rave reviews for its friendly and helpful staff and efficient service.
Flights to Maurice Bishop International Airport come from the Caribbean (Barbados, San Juan, Port of Spain, St Vincent and Canouan); North America (Toronto, Miami and New York); and Europe (London).
