Known for its wholesome agricultural produce, beautiful scenery and wide range of cultural events, Abbotsford is one of the gems of Canada’s west coast.
The town is located in a rich farming region, and there are many attractions relating to this heritage. Visitors can sample local dishes and learn about the area’s history at Clayburn Village Store, dine on freshly caught fish from the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery and learn all about the origins of Abbotsford at the fascinating Trethewey House Museum.
The town’s cultural life is another huge attraction. Catch the excitement of the International Air Show, held in August, where you can see dazzling demonstrations of airborne virtuosity, while the city hosts Canada’s largest dog show, an excellent Motorcycle Festival and a spectacular rodeo event as well.
Lovers of outdoor activities will be in heaven when visiting Abbotsford as well. Head out mountain biking on mountain trails or try indoor pit biking at a specialist facility. Fish some of British Columbia’s legendary streams, play some golf, try horse riding at the region’s ranches or rent an all-terrain vehicle and race around specially designed off-road courses.
Abbotsford is also a fine dining destination, and the region hosts many superb micro-breweries as well as the award winning Pemberton Distillery. And any lovers of great food will want to spend some time wandering around the Farm and Country Market where they can grab everything from veggies to local honey and cider that will make any picnic extra special.
Visitors arriving in winter can enjoy a fresh selection of delights, such as the unrivalled ski slopes of British Columbia, snowmobile driving and even dogsledding with local guides. Whenever you visit, Abbotsford will have something to offer.
For skiing fans, a visit between November and March will be ideal. Try mid-March for some excellent deals on equipment hire and chairlifts. Summer means crowds flocking to the town’s festivals and markets, but accommodations should be cheapest in September and May, which are excellent times to visit. The weather will be mild, and all of the outdoor activities will be open for business.
If you want to visit Vancouver or Seattle, or experience some solitude in the mountains, a rental car is essential. Buses will serve the route between most hotels and the central shopping district and also connect Abbotsford to the American border. Buy a day pass for the cheapest transport option.
