You wouldn’t normally associate gambling with community development, but there are certain locations across the US where the two combine.

Since the 1970s, many Native American tribes have setup gaming enterprises on their reservations with the aim of attaining self-sufficiency.

It’s fair to say that any dollar you spend on gaming, shopping or dining on a reservation goes a small way to supporting one of America’s most marginalized communities.

There are more than 400 gaming establishments on Native American reservations across the US. Some rival Las Vegas’ finest casinos for size, quality and luxury. Here’s our pick of the best.

Mohegan Sun – Uncasvilla (Connecticut)

Top notch gaming, shopping and dining can be found within the Mohegan’s three sections – Casino of the Wind, Casino of the Sky, and Casino of the Earth. Its thousands of slot machines and several hundred table games should help to keep your spirits up – at least while you’re winning.

Viejas Casino – Alpine (California)

Alongside the Viejas’ 2,500 slot machines, you can find daily poker tournaments and an off-track betting pavilion sporting a dozen 50-inch flat screens that satisfies even the most discerning of the Golden State’s professional punters.

Foxwoods Resort Casino – Mashantucket (Connecticut)

Over 6,300 slot machines can be found within Foxwoods’ 300,000 feet of gambling space – no other establishment in the world has more. It’s said the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe resort is more profitable than all the casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City – fingers crossed that’s more down to the high-end shopping than the tables!
