La Guardia rail service proposed

A rail service that connects LaGuardia to Manhattan has been suggested by one New York transport official.

Elliot Sander, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), said freight rail lines could be incorporated into the subway system to provide transport to the airport.

In his State of the MTA speech, Sander pointed to a 40-year plan which would see new regional train stops opened in the Bronx to accommodate a service directly to LaGuardia. He also said that the MTA is considering a second AirTrain service to connect LaGuardia to the Long Island Rail Road and the Staten Island light-rail service.

As well as the planned rail and subway expansions, Sander and Mayor Bloomberg will increase bus services in the city as part of the $46 million initiative.
