In need of a bit of inspiration for your next summer getaway? Not to worry, we have you covered. Check out these five reasons to visit Chicago this summer.
Music Festivals
As one of the country’s most famous music festivals, Lollapalooza is well worth a summer pilgrimage to the Windy City. Artists like The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, The Killers and Mumford & Sons headline this three-day concert at Grant Park held Aug 2-4. Can’t get tickets? Then head next door to Millennium Park for free concerts all summer long.
Green City Market Chefs’ BBQ Benefit
It’s just not summer without a barbecue, but this Chicago event packs a one-two punch: it’s headlined by the city’s top chefs and benefits the market’s efforts to promote and educate about local sustainable food. This all-inclusive barbecue includes a smorgasbord of offerings from Michelin-starred chefs, local craft beers, wine and craft cocktails. Now that’s what we call a barbecue!
While Chicago delivers year-round for visiting foodies, summer is especially friendly for culinary connoisseurs of all levels thanks to the world’s largest food festival, held annual at Grant Park in July. Taste of Chicago brings dozens of restaurants to the park from July 10-14, serving up everything from Chicago classics like deep dish pizzas and hot dogs to creations by celebrity chefs like Rick Bayless. Once you’ve had your fill of food, you can watch Robin Thicke take the stage or take notes in the cooking demonstration tent.
Rooftop Bars
While no one would think to step foot on a Chicago rooftop in the blustery winter months, summer is a whole different story. Vertigo Sky Lounge offers an indoor/outdoor experience with DJs, outdoor fire pit and a view of the city from 26 stories up. Over at the Trump International Hotel, the Terrace on the 16th floor offers one of the city’s most lavish rooftop bar experiences. In true Trump fashion, you’ll find $20-50 cocktails – but the views of Lake Michigan and Chicago River are hard to argue with.
Waterfront Fun
Think there aren’t any beaches in the midwest? Think again. The shores of Lake Michigan offer 33 beaches for Chicago visitors, where you can fish, take a cruise or simply soak up the sun on the sand. In August, Lake Michigan hosts the free Chicago Air and Water Show, an annual air show that takes place over Chicago’s shoreline.
