The Cannes Film Festival kicks off today, and while the festival is largely an industry-only event, the coastal city of Cannes offers plenty of laid-back living – even if you’re not walking the red carpet. Here’s a guide to making the most out of 48 hours on the French Riviera:

DAY 1

Start your day with a trip to Marche Forville, an authentic French market selling local goods like cheese, fois gras, tea and fresh produce. Be sure to get here early, since the market often closes by early afternoon. Take some time to explore the surrounding streets, filled with cafes and stores offering treats like roasted rabbit and French wine.

After your morning shopping, head over to the cobblestone streets of Le Suquet, Cannes’ historic quarter. Dozens of quaint cafes and hidden restaurants will vie for your attention as you stroll through the narrow streets, making Le Suquet the perfect lunch stop.

After lunch, continue up the hill to reach Musee de la Castre, a medieval castle-turned-museum that offers unbeatable views of the city.

Your next stop is Rue d’Antibes, Cannes’ most notable shopping street. High-end designers sell everything from clothing to home accents, and you’ll find plenty of cafes and bakeries for mid-afternoon refueling.

For dinner, head to La Croisette, the beachside promenade with no shortage of restaurants to choose from, whether you’re looking for authentic French fare or hearty Italian cuisine.

After dinner, you can dance the night away at Le Bâoli or grab cocktails at Le Sun 7 before retiring to your room at Hotel Martinez, a Hyatt property right on La Croisette.

DAY 2

Your second day begins with a ferry ride to Île Ste-Marguerite, about a half-mile from Cannes’ shores. Here, be sure to stop by Musee de la Mer, or Museum of the Sea, at Fort Royal, where you can see the actual prison cell that housed the Man in the Iron Mask. After your visit, you can spend a few lazy hours strolling through the pines on a leisurely nature walk.

After you’ve soaked up the island, head back to the hotel for lunch at Z Plage, located right on the hotel’s private beach. After lunch, grab one of the restaurant’s day beds and spend a few hours relaxing on the beach with a book.

When you’re ready to stretch your legs, end your day with a late-afternoon stroll along on La Croisette for a look at the shops that line the promenade. You’ll also find casinos, like Palm Beach Casino, Croisette Casino and Casino Barriere, along La Croisette.
