When is the best time to fly to Toledo?
The city has warm, humid conditions from May to August, and it is during this month that its location on the banks of the Maumee River is best enjoyed. The Crosby Festival of the Arts takes place at the end of June. There are pleasantly warm temperatures in the shoulder seasons, from March to April and September to October. This is the ideal time to enjoy walking through the centre of the city, and for hikes along the river. November to February bring cold, sometimes freezing temperatures, and these are ideal months to experience the city's many restaurants and its vibrant cultural life.
Toledo is a city of some 300,000 people in the north of the state of Ohio in the United States. It borders Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes of North America. Visitors can travel to the shores of Lake Erie to take boat tours of the lake. A self-guided walking tour of the Old West End rewards any visitor interested in architecture. This area has many fine Victorian buildings. Downtown Toledo, on the waterfront, has some impressive skyscrapers. The Museum of Art is world-renowned and has an exhibition of some 30,000 objects. There are major collections of glass art from the 19th and 20th centuries, reflecting the city's history as a centre of the glass industry. This industry is the reason why many Americans still know it as "The Glass City". The museum's Glass Pavilion opened in 2006 to widespread acclaim and its Centre for Visual Arts was designed by the architect Frank Gehry. Throughout the city, there are more than 40 pieces of public art commissioned from leading artists. Outside the city centre, Hudson Gallery specialises in contemporary art. A few miles south of the city centre is Toledo Zoo. Among its many zoned areas is an African Savanna zone, which aims to give visitors a safari-like experience. The local baseball team is called Toledo Mud Hens. Visitors can book advance tickets to home games which take place at Fifth Third Field. The city's opera, ballet and theatre companies all have regular performances and seats can be reserved in advance.
Getting around Toledo
This is a large city and many residents travel around by car. The local transport authority is called TARTA. It operates more than 30 bus routes in and around the greater Toledo area. All buses have bicycle racks. Bicycles are available to rent at several locations in the city centre.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Toledo is served by Toledo Express Airport (TOL), located some 16 miles (26 km) from the city centre. Major car rental companies have vehicles available to rent at the airport. Airport shuttle services are available, and need to be booked in advance. The journey from the airport to the city centre takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
