Cheap flights to Reggio Calabria (REG)

When is the best time to fly to Reggio Calabria?

The climate in Reggio Calabria is fairly mild year-round so even in January and February the temperature usually doesn't dip below 14 degrees Celsius. The warmest month is in August, which can also be a busy time to visit. The most affordable time to visit would be during the cooler months from November to March when tourism slows down somewhat and flights are cheaper than during peak season, which runs June through August.

City overview

Reggio Calabria is worth a visit all on its own, but it’s also a gateway to Sicily making it an ideal destination for anyone wanting to visit more of Italy in one trip. The port city is the largest in the region and the second oldest city in all of Italy. One of the main attractions in the city and one that many visitors put atop their must-see list is the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia (national archeological museum). This museum houses the Bronzi di Riace, two ancient Greek bronze statues that date from around 450 BC and are incredibly intact. They were discovered in 1972 and have been housed in the museum since 1981.

Another much-visited part of Reggio Calabria is the waterfront promenade. The scenic strip along the water is lined with trees, outdoor cafes and shops and is ideal for aimless wandering. The area gets particularly busy during the “passeggiata”, a time that marks the end of the Italian workday when locals take an evening stroll to socialise and relax before heading home for dinner. The promenade is close to the beach, which is another popular attraction in the city. Weekends are the busiest time when many locals visit, but weekdays are much quieter. There are change rooms and showers at the beach.

Other sites worth a visit in the city include Villa Zerbi, a 14th century villa built in Venetian style; Aspromonte National Park, which is located in the mountains behind the city and a good place to hike; and the ancient walls around the city.
