Airports in Thailand

Language

Many people speak English in tourist areas, but Thai is the official language of Thailand.

Money

Thailand’s official currency is the baht, which breaks down into 100 satang. You can change money at airports, hotels, banks and exchange bureaus. Banks are closed on the weekends, but you can find ATMs in most tourist resorts and cities. Large hotels and shops usually accept traveler’s checks, but you’ll get the best rate at a bank. Major credit cards are usually accepted at large businesses and hotels.

Communications

Thailand’s international country code is 66. To call another country from Thailand, dial 001 followed by the appropriate country code. Most of the country has international direct dial facilities. You can usually find Internet cafes in main resorts and towns.

Tipping

Tipping is becoming increasingly common, but is not expected. Most hotels and restaurants already add a 10 percent service charge to the bill. You don’t need to tip taxi drivers.

Safety

Most travelers don’t have trouble on visits to Thailand. There is still a continuing threat of terrorism to Westerners, and foreigners should be cautious in public places, as political demonstrations have become more frequent in central areas of Bangkok. Keep a close watch on your passports and credit cards and don’t flash around money or jewelry.

Health

Consult your doctor at least three weeks before visiting Thailand. It’s a good idea to get vaccinated against typhoid fever and hepatitis A. Also take precautions against malaria, which is a risk outside of Bangkok. If you’re coming from an area infected with yellow fever, you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. While medical facilities in major cities are good, you will not be treated if you don’t have money or insurance to pay for treatment.

Electricity

Thailand’s electrical current is 220 volts AC, 50Hz and uses both flat and round, two-pinned plugs.
