Taiwan has been controlled by Europeans, the Japanese and, presently, the Chinese, but also boasts a lot of native culture and history. The effects of this constant changing of hands can be seen in its lack of much historic architecture, due to the Japanese bent on modernization at the end of the 19th century. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is the city’s major international airport and is serviced by many international carriers. It is still often referred to by its old name, Chiang Kai Shek International Airport (CKS). Songshan Airport offers limited international options within the region, including to Japan and mainland China.
