Reasons to fly to Santana

The trip to Santana is an adventure in itself. Once the flight to Santana arrives in Madeira, the real fun begins. Hold on tight as you make your way through the high cliffs along the narrow coastline roads that feature sharp turns and oddly-placed waterfalls. While the scenery is beautiful, Santana itself has much to offer travelers. The “A-frame” homes made of stone and straw have housed people and animals for centuries and the 17-acres of Santana countryside is now home to Madeira’s famous theme park, which opened in 2004. Visitors to the park enjoy everything from bungee-jumping to wall climbing, making the trek to Santana seem like a breeze. After a wild ride and a steep climb, settle in to the theme park’s education center where the focus is on history and Madeira culture.

Santana Travel Information

  • Try the extraordinarily ugly Scabbard Fish (espetada).  It is only caught in two places in the world - Madeira and Japan - and is a delectable treat.
  • Madeira’s famous wine was originally developed by mistake as the long sea journeys improved it to the sherry-like consistency we know today.  There are four types of Madeira wines.  Two are aperitifs to be drunk before a meal: the dry Sercial, and the medium dry Verdelho, and two for drinking with dessert.  Bual has a rich flavor and Malmsey is dark and sweet.  Although nowadays the wine is matured commercially, it might benefit from the journey home with you.
