Hohensalzburg Fortress
The Hohensalzburg Castle sits atop some rocks 394 feet above the city. The castle was first built in the 11th century to defend the city from the Bavarians, but Archbishop Leonhard Von Keutschach rebuilt much of the castle in the 16th century when he added the state apartments. It’s free to walk around the courtyard and castle’s outskirts, but the guided tour inside the state apartments charges admission. The tour ends with a visit to two museums that display weapons, armor and torture instruments.
