Pakistan’s official currency is the Pakistani rupee, which breaks down into 100 paisa. It’s a good idea to carry your traveler’s checks in US dollars or UK pounds, and you can exchange them at banks, high-end hotels and larger stores. Many of the hotels and larger shops accept credit cards, especially American Express. You are expected to bargain when shopping.
Pakistan’s international country code is 92. To call another country from Pakistan, dial 00 followed by the appropriate country code. Main towns and cities usually have Internet cafes.
It’s not customary to tip, and most of the larger restaurants and hotels include a 10 percent service charge in their bill. Giving a little extra up front, or baksheesh, will speed up the process.
Terrorism is a major threat in Pakistan. There have been many suicide bombings, murders and kidnappings, often affecting innocent bystanders. Avoid places of worship during any prayer times or festivals. Make sure you are well informed with the latest travel advisories before and during your visit to Pakistan.
If you’re coming from an area infected with yellow fever, you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Parts of Pakistan have malaria and there are also risks of polio, typhoid and hepatitis A. Stick to bottled and sterilized water. Avoid uncooked meats, salads, unpeeled fruit and dairy products. Make sure you are covered by health insurance.
Pakistan’s electrical current is 230 volts, 50Hz and uses round, two-pinned or three-pinned plugs.
