Money

The official form of currency is the euro. You’ll get the best exchange rate at an ATM, but you can also exchange money at banks, exchange bureaus and some large hotels. Traveler’s checks and major credits are usually accepted, especially in major tourist destinations.

Communications

France’s international country code is 33. To call another country from France, you’ll have to check with your network for the outgoing code. Get a phone card for the cheapest rates. Most towns have Internet cafes.

Tipping

Hotels and restaurants usually add a 15 percent service charge, so you don’t need to tip on top of that. An extra 2 to 3 percent is customary if service has been great. If there isn’t a service charge, tip 15 percent. Tip your taxi driver 10 to 15 percent of the fare. A tip of €1.50 per day is appropriate for hotel staff, and you can tip bathroom and coatroom attendants €1. Tip bus drivers and tour guides as well.

Safety

Be aware of your surroundings during your travels in France. Don’t leave your luggage unattended and guard yourself against petty theft. Pickpockets are known to work on the metro and in the airports. Don’t keep valuables in your car, especially in the south and in Corsica. It’s a good idea to conceal your bags and purses when driving or walking – bag snatching is common.

Health

Medical facilities in France are very good, but you should carry your own health insurance.

Electricity

France’s electrical current is 220 volts, 50Hz and uses two-pinned European plugs.
