Fargo is a bustling city with about 100,000 inhabitants, situated on the Red River in the south of North Dakota. You might know it best as the setting for the Coen Brothers film ‘Fargo’ but this city has so much more to offer the visitor. The Fargo-Moorhead Visitor Center is an ideal first stop, situated in an old grain elevator. There is extensive tourist information available and a celebrity walk of fame just outside. A theme park, Bonanzaville USA, offers you and your family a trip back into the past with exhibits that show life as it was in the Red River area in the pioneer era. The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center has an impressive replica of a Viking ship that traveled to Norway and back. There is also a range of permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Fargo Air Museum is a must for all fans of air travel. The exhibits include a wide variety of military and civilian aeroplanes. Almost all of these planes are in flying condition. The city boasts the largest billiard hall in North America, where you can enjoy a game as well as an excellent dinner and a drink at the bar. For families, go-karting at Thunder Road Family Fun makes for an ideal day out. Adventure golf is another of the many attractions at Thunder Road. FargoDome, a large indoor venue, hosts everything from Broadway musicals to visiting pop stars and sports events. Booking ahead is recommended for all events at FargoDome.
The months of May to August bring pleasantly high temperatures to Fargo and are a popular time to visit the city. There are moderate temperatures in the shoulder seasons of March to April, and September to October. This is an ideal time for enjoying walks along the Red River. From November to February there can be freezing days. This is an ideal time to enjoy Fargo’s wide range of fine restaurants and its many other indoor attractions. The first week of May is the city’s Vietnam Week. Its focus on the Vietnam war will fascinate anyone interested in history. In March an airshow draws in crowds from around the state.
Fargo is a compact city. Many people get around by car, and there are plenty of parking spaces and car parks available. Fargo’s bus services are comprehensive and the routes are easily understood. Taxis are plentiful and are good value for money.
Named after the man who donated the land for the airport, Hector International (FAR) is located 3 miles (5km) northwest of the center of Fargo, North Dakota. It received a much-needed makeover in 2008, including an expansion of its passenger terminal as well as construction of a new gate, baggage claim and security checkpoint area.
A small and charming airport, Hector International features a basic, yet sufficient, array of amenities for its modest number of annual passengers. A customs service is available for international flights, however the airlines – Allegiant Air, American Eagle, Delta and United Express – offer only domestic flights.
Hector International is no Heathrow, but what it lacks in size and passenger traffic it makes up for in friendly and efficient customer service. In fact, staff are so accommodating that they’ll put a flight on hold if queues at security are slow.
