Castle Royal Palace
Budapest’s Castle Royal Palace sits atop Castle Hill in the Castle District of Buda. The castle’s first occupant was King Bela, who fortified the castle in the 14th century after the Mongol invasion. The city, which occupied a strategic location in Europe, was invaded many times which caused the city to reinvent itself after repeated destruction. The castle is a mixture of architectural styles and now houses several important museums and historical monuments. You can learn more about the city’s history from the Budapest History Museum. Afterwards, head over to the Hungarian National Gallery, the Ludwig Museum and the National Library.

Transport: Take tram 18 to Dózsa György tér; or bus 5 or 78; from Clark Ádám tér take the funicular railway; from Moszkvatér take Várbusz (castle bus).
Opening time: The Budapest History Museum is closed on Mondays and open the rest of the week from 10am – 6pm. Closes at 4pm from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28. The Hungarian National Gallery is closed on Mondays, but open the rest of week from 10am – 6pm. The Ludwig Museum is closed Mondays and open the rest of the week from 10am – 10pm. Limited exhibitions open for the last two hours.
Admission: Budapest History Museum – Adult – Ft1400, Child – Ft700. Hungarian National Gallery guided tours are Ft2000 each. Ludwig Museum – Adult – Ft600, Child – Ft300.
