Who says you can’t experience two countries and cultures in one setting? A quick flight to Provence lands you in the middle of France and Italy cultures giving travelers the chance to experience the best of both countries.

This region of southeastern France sits along the Mediterranean, adjacent to Italy, and is known as the first Roman province outside the country. Provence, although relatively small in size, certainly has had its place in history. During the French Revolution, the city was split between those who wanted it to become a constitutional monarchy like England, and those who did not. In Napoleon’s day, the city rejoiced at his downfall, and artists like Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cezanne have all beautifully depicted the area’s scenic flowers, skies, countryside, and winding roads.

Book flights to Provence to stroll down the cobblestone streets and create your own picturesque paradise.

Provence Insider Information

Parc National du Mercantour: Europe’s highest mountain pass calls skiers to book flights to Provence every winter. The wildest and most northern area, Col de Restefond la Bonetter, through Vallee de l’Ubaye is filled with beautiful geographic features like gorges, rocks, and white waters. Birds, golden eagles, and bearded vultures roam the treetops and animals like marmot, mouflon, chamois, bouquetin, deer, and wild boar scamper on the ground. For nature lovers booking flights to Provence, make sure to check out this incredible natural area, and explore all that it has to offer.

Cours Mirabeau (Aix-en-Provence): Stroll down Aix-en-Provence’s beautiful main street to spend a charming afternoon in a quaint little space. Tall trees line the cobblestone boulevards, and Rococco fountains create the perfect outdoor atmosphere. Locals fill tiny sidewalk cafes and shops, and just around the corner are hotels and mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries, steeping in grandeur. The road starts at Place de la Liberation, but that’s just where the fun begins.

Monastère de St-Paul-de-Mausolée: Art and history buffs book flights to Provence to wander the halls of the Monastere de St-Paul-de-Mausolee. Settled in St. Remy-de-Provence, the asylum used to be home to famed artist, Vincent Van Gogh. In fact, you can walk through the sign-guided tour to see exactly where he was when he painted each of his masterpieces. Visitors are allowed to view the treatment room he stayed in and where he completed his infamously lonely work, Starry Night. If the art and the story don’t get you, then the gorgeous architecture will. St. Paul’s lavish Romanesque chapel serves as a stunning sanctuary, and its arches, columns, and carved capital make it a sight all on its own.

Wine Tasting: It’s impossible to book a flight to Provence without your taste buds enduring an incredible journey. The rich farmland that the area is most famous for happens to produce delicious (and some say the world’s finest) grape vines. Local vintage vineyards pepper the roads and with so many to choose from, it’s easy to focus your entire Provence travel around the red and white juice. Some say that the best vineyards are tucked between Bollene and Avignon, near the lower portion of the Rhone. Take your time tasting and learning about each vineyard’s techniques. If you have a favorite, don’t worry about packing it on your return Provence flight – most places will ship the wine home for you.
