Airport Overview

Page sections

The larger of Shanghai's two airports, Pudong International opened in 1999. It currently has one terminal, though a second is being built and there are plans for a total of four terminals. It replaced Hong Qiao as the main international airport and takes about 60 percent of all air traffic into Shanghai. In 2006 the airport handled around 17 million passengers. www.shanghaiairport.com

Getting into Town

Rail: The Maglev Train, a magnetic levitation train and the fastest in the world, connects the airport with metro line no.2 at Longyang station (journey time: eight minutes). The station is situated next to the airport and is connected to the terminal by a bridge. Work is under way on the underground metro line no. 2, which will link Pudong and Hong Qiao International airports. This should be completed by 2010, in time for the World Expo.

Road: Taxi: Taxis are available and passengers should make sure the driver uses the meter; passengers must join the correct queue for the desired destination; queues are determined by journey duration (journey time to Shanghai: 25-40 minutes). Bus: There are five bus routes which serve different areas of Shanghai. Airport bus no. 1 connects Pudong International Airport with Hong Qiao International Airport (journey time: 30-40 minutes) and airport bus no. 2 runs to Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Other routes run to Zunyi Road, Dongjiagwan Road and Shanghai Railway Station.
