Des Moines International Airport was first opened in the 1930s, to replace the six airfields that originally existed in the town. The airport is now used by eight U.S. carriers - Allegiant Air, Midwest Airlines, American Eagle, Northwest Airlines, Comair - Delta Connection (ASA), United Airlines, Continental Express, US Airways - and is the main airport to serve much of Iowa. Getting into Town

Taxi:Capitol Cab Company (tel: 515 282 8111) and Yellow Cab Company (tel: 515 243 1111) provide taxi services from the airport. Limousine: Limousine transport is provided by Majestic Limousine (tel: 515 243 4475) and A-1 Executive Limousine (tel: 515 276 0001).

Bus: Des Moines Metro Transit Authority (tel: 515 283 8100) operates local buses to and from the airport. Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (tel: 877 686 0029) helps with transport arrangements to the counties surrounding Polk County and Des Moines.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: There are two ATMs, one in the lower terminal, the other in the concourse. Wi-Fi access is available throughout the terminal and concourse. A wireless card is required to use the service.

Eating and drinking: The restaurant in the terminal lobby has been remodeled to create a food court atmosphere. There is a full-service lounge serving grill items on the lower level. On the concourse level is a full-service restaurant featuring a full menu of cuisine and libations. A few more outlets are also available in the concourse.

Shopping: A shop selling gifts, traveler's convenience items, newspapers and magazines can be found on the lobby level. There is also a retail shop on the concourse level.

Luggage: For lost or found items, contact the Airport Administration office (tel: (515) 256 5100) located on the skywalk level of the main terminal building.

Other facilities: Most restrooms offer baby changing tables. The airport offers a translation service for 75-some languages and dialects.

Airport Disabled Facilities

The airport is fully accessible for disabled travelers. There are elevators, ramps and adapted toilets, and wheelchairs can be supplied if required. TDDs are located in the concourses and on the terminal lower level. The airlines serving the airport have wheelchairs available. Disabled parking is available near the lifts on all levels of the parking ramp.

Airport Conference and Business Facilities

The Business Center, open from 5am-10pm, provides desk space, telephone service, internet access and lounge space. It is located in the main terminal immediately opposite the ticket counters. Meeting rooms of all sizes are available on the skywalk level of the main terminal.

Directions

From the north follow I-35 southbound or the west follow I-80 eastbound to (I-235), exit at Martin Luther King Parkway, proceed south until it meets with Fleur Drive. Continue on Fleur to the airport. From the south, take I-35 northbound to Iowa-5, go east 7 miles and exit at Fleur Drive, proceed north on Fleur to airport. From the east, follow I-80 westbound to US-65 south. Turn north at the Fleur exit and proceed 2 miles to the airport.
