Cheapflights.com Debut’s Travel Price Index

BOSTON (October 22, 2008) – Is the cost of flying exceeding the American families’ cost of living? It depends where that family lives, according to the newest Travelnomics report released today by travel search engine Cheapflights.com. In “Travelnomics: The Travel Price Index,” flight prices from 30 U.S. markets are compared to the cost of living index in those cities.
“After assessing the data for each city’s Travel Price Index, there was surprising information across the 30 markets,” said Carl Schwartz, chief travel officer for Cheapflights.com. “Flying from JFK presents New Yorkers with the biggest bargain, while travelers from Houston and Ft. Lauderdale ended up on the other end of the scale with some of the most expensive flights when compared to recent cost-of-living data.”
Other cities scoring favorably on the Index include San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Among those where travel costs are the highest include Salt Lake City, Honolulu and Minneapolis.
“The good news—as exemplified by Travelnomics—is that you can find great deals in a lot of the country’s top markets. Yes, there are some places where it has become more difficult; even more reason to book a great deal when you see it, especially for holiday travel,” continued Schwartz.
Cheapflights culled airfare figures from its database containing more than 1.5 million flight deals across hundreds of departure points. The cost-of-living data is supplied by the Economic Research Institute.
