Billings is situated along the Yellowstone River and is the largest city in Montana. The city was named after Frederick Billings, then President of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Today, Billings serves primarily as trade and manufacturing center and a hub for travelers booking flights to Billings as they head to Yellowstone National Park.
Outdoor enthusiasts find cheap flights to Billings to experience the area’s recreational opportunities including hunting and fishing. Other top attractions include the Yellowstone Art Museum, the Billings Depot and Skypoint.
And don’t forget to bring an extra suitcase on your Billings flight – Montana has no sales tax so shopping is at a premium for tourists.
Billings has a semi-arid climate, with low humidity all year round. Summers (June to August) are sunny, warm and pleasant, and fall is a particularly lovely season with spells of “Indian summer”. The first frost usually comes at the end of September. Winter (December to February) brings fairly heavy snowfalls, but snow does not accumulate. Warm “Chinook” winds during February and March bring unseasonably warm conditions.
Peak Season:
There’s no bad time to fly to Billings — the city enjoys a warm, dry climate most of the year (except the winters, which can be cold and snowy). Summer is the best time to book flights to Billings because there is always an outdoor activity, festival or carnival to attend.
Off Season:
Winter months can be cold and rainy, but if you don’t mind the cold then it’s likely you can find a cheap flight to Billings in mid-winter.
Downtown Billings can be confusing to visitors. The city is laid out on a grid, but the numbered avenues increase in both the north and south directions, and the east-west streets are also numbered. At least the downtown area is small enough to explore on foot. Most people choose to rent a car, but there is a city bus service. The Billings Met Transit buses stop at most corners and the system is very easy to use. Just look for its blue and green signs and make sure you have exact change to pay the driver. Buses don’t run on Sundays or major public holidays.
Stop off in Billings on your way to Yellowstone National Park and enjoy some of the Montana scenery and tax-free shopping.
There’s a taste of the Old West in Billings. Take a tour of one of the city’s museums and landmarks associated with legends of the Old West.
A stop at the Western Heritage Center will delight children looking for a little one-on-one time with animals.
